Oconee County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Walhalla .

The county is located in the extreme northwest of South Carolina, borders North Carolina in the north and Georgia in the southwest and has an area of 1745 square kilometers, of which 125 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pickens County , Anderson County , Hart County (Georgia), Franklin County (Georgia), Stephens County (Georgia), Habersham County (Georgia), Rabun County (Georgia), Macon County (North Carolina) , Jackson County, North Carolina, and Transylvania County, North Carolina.

Oconee County was formed on January 29, 1868 and named after the Oconee Indian people who belonged to the Hitchiti .

According to the 2000 census , Oconee County had 66,215 people in 27,283 households and 19,589 families. The population density was 41 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.14 percent white, 8.38 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.36 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 27,283 households, 28.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 24.7 percent were single households and 9.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.85 people.
22.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 93.5 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,666 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,047. Males had a median income of $ 31,032 versus $ 22,156 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,965. 7.6 percent of families and 10.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
