Ezquerro's first big club was the CA Osasuna . About Atlético Madrid and the island club RCD Mallorca came forward in 1998 to Athletic Bilbao . At Bilbao, he played his first UEFA Champions League game on August 12, 1998 (against Dinamo Tbilisi ). The agile and dribbling striker quickly became an indispensable part of the first team. His personal best season was 2004/05, when he scored five goals in seven UEFA Cup games. He was then signed for a free transfer from FC Barcelona .
