Lee Correctional Institution

The Lee Correctional Institution is a US maximum security prison in Bishopville , South Carolina .

The prison is one of the Level 3 facilities in the US prison system for prisoners serving long sentences for violent crimes. The facility only has single and double cells. The Lee Correctional Institution has a capacity of 1,654 inmates and is located around 65 km east of the capital, Columbia .

history

The prison opened in 1993 and has been the largest maximum security prison in South Carolina ever since. Violent crimes against inmates repeatedly occurred at the facility. In 2012, two hostages were taken in the prison within three months. In 2017, two inmates died as a result of violent crimes. Inmate Robert Odell Brown was killed in a fight among inmates in February 2018.

On April 15, 2018, a seven-hour fight broke out between gang members in three of the prison's accommodation buildings. By the time law enforcement officials got the fighting under control, seven prisoners were dead. According to the South Carolina Prison Authority, the fighting involved gang territory, contraband and telephones. According to the local newspaper The State , most of the victims were stabbed with homemade weapons.
