Wilhelm Engelhard (artist)
Wilhelm Engelhard , also Friedrich Wilhelm Engelhard or Engelhardt , (born September 9, 1813 in Grünhagen , today in Bienenbüttel ; † June 23, 1902 in Hanover ) was a German portrait painter and sculptor . He was married to Marie Pauline Roesing (born December 14 , 1902 ) 1828 in Hamburg ).
Life
Engelhard initially trained as an ivory carver in London and Paris , before he began studying sculpture at the Higher Trade School in Hanover in 1837 , with the support of the Hanover royal family . He became a pupil of Bertel Thorvaldsen in Copenhagen in 1839 and of Ludwig Schwanthaler in Munich in 1841 . In 1848 he was a portrait painter in Hamburg and a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 . 1855–58 he lived in Rome and from 1859 - called by King George V - back in Hanover to help design the Marienburg (near Nordstemmen), where he designed the Edda frieze . Engelhard had been a member of the Hanover Art Association since 1859 and became a professor at the Polytechnic School in 1869. Although he is still represented in Hanover today with a large number of sculptures, monuments and works of art, one could call him the 'great stranger' of the Hanoverian sculptors.
Engelhardt was the father and initial trainer of the sculptor Roland Engelhard .
