history

Title page of Lower Saxony magazine, August 1901

The Lower Saxony magazine has been published since 1895. It was founded by the brothers Friedrich and August Freudenthal as a supraregional bi-monthly publication. Friedrich Freudenthal headed the Low German section for almost 30 years.

Initially, the magazine was published twice a month by Carl-Schünemann- Verlag in Bremen and was supposed to provide information on history, regional and folklore as well as language and literature in Lower Saxony with a circulation of 4,000 copies .

The editor around 1930 and again after the Second World War was the writer Alma Rogge (1894–1969).

In the 1990s the magazine was published 6 times a year by Landbuch-Verlag (Hanover) with a volume of 48 pages. The photos on the inside were in black and white (from issue 5/1998 partly in color), the title page was designed with the help of a color photo. From August 2000, “Lower Saxony” appeared in a new design - now monthly - by Landbuch-Verlag (Hanover). Each issue was now completely in color and had a total of 64 pages - including advertisements. The magazine claimed to “continue to provide well-founded and competent information about the country and its regions”, but it should also be fun according to the motto “experience culture - enjoy free time”.
