The Brobergen Ostefähre (baptized Helmut Hudaff ) is a ferry across the Lower East that still exists today , connecting the village of Brobergen on the right of the Oste with the lands belonging to Brobergen on the left bank of the river.

history

Around 1250 the noble family von Brobergen built a castle here on the Oste. A drawbridge led over the Oste. Both were destroyed in the Thirty Years War . Broberg farmers bought the estate around 1840. Officially, the farmers were now united in a real association , which was also the owner of the ferry. One of the farmers lived in the manor house and became a ferryman , as most of the land to be farmed was on the other east side. He received a restricted liquor license from the Royal Landdrostei , which was only valid for drinks for the ferry passengers.

In 1941 the manor house with the small bar was demolished because it was dilapidated. In 1956 a new ferry house was built by the Mehe -Sielverband and the ferryman had to operate the Mehe lock and the Mehe pumping station in addition to the ferry . Because of the low pay he lived freely and got next to the permission of the tavern as Deputat sufficient rye, potatoes, turnips, straw and peat to keep pigs.

In the 1970s a used motor ferry, built in 1924, was purchased. Stormy weather prevailed at the overpass and the boat ferry drifted off and ran aground in Blumenthal . About ten years later, after an official examination, the ferry received approval for the general transport of tourists. When it became more difficult to find ferry people and fewer and fewer farmers used the ferry, the authorities planned to shut down the ferry.

In 2007 the Broberger Ferry Association was founded to preserve the historical legacy. The association leased the ferry station as well as the restaurant from the Realverband and several activists took their ferry exams in front of the Cuxhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority. This saved the ferry and is still available to the remaining farmers and a growing number of tourists.

Description of the ferry

The Brobergen pram ferry was previously in operation in Geversdorf and was built in 1924 as a hand-drawn cable ferry by the shipbuilding company Unterweser AG in Bremerhaven on behalf of the Stade water engineering authority as construction number 214 . It has a length of 17.90 m, a width of 5.45 m, a load capacity of 10 tons and is approved for 30 people. In 1926 the motorization took place with a machine of the type Deutz A2L 514, which pulls the rope via a winch and thus relieves the ferryman.

The previously unnamed ferry received its current name Helmut Hudaff only after it was taken over by the ferry association. The name honors the chairman of the Realverband and honorary mayor of the same name.
