Railway stations in Lower Saxony |
The Cuxhaven railway station is a railway terminus in on the Elbe estuary located in Lower Saxony port city of Cuxhaven . The station is the end point of the Niederelbebahn coming from Hamburg and the Bremerhaven – Cuxhaven line, as well as the beginning of the three-kilometer connecting line to the Amerika-Bahnhof . The train station is located southeast of the city center, directly at the harbor.
history
The first train station in Cuxhaven was opened in 1881 with the start of operations on the Niederelbebahn. In 1896 the second line to Geestemünde , a district of Bremerhaven since 1947 , went into operation. A larger train station was needed for the increased rail operations. The new terminus was opened in 1898. The first station building remained as a service building and was demolished in spring 2020. Parallel to the passenger traffic systems, there are freight traffic systems in the direction of the port, initially the loading street with goods shed, and even closer to the port is the former large fish shipping station.
Station building
The station building is located across the tracks on the cross platform.
In 2016, the city of Cuxhaven bought more than 30,000 m² of the site from DB, including the area on which the station building stands. On July 17, 2016, the city of Cuxhaven finally sold the reception building, including an area of around 1,700 m², to Bürgerbahnhof Cuxhaven eG . Extensive demolition and renovation work has been carried out since September 2017. The reception building was reopened on December 5, 2018. On the ground floor there is a DB travel center, train station catering, car rental, train station bookstore, tourist information, souvenir shop, bus info and public toilets, on the upper floors there are operating and staff rooms for the transport companies and a meeting room for up to 50 people.
Station area
The station originally had four tracks on two covered central platforms. The southernmost track 4 was abandoned after 1984, the platform roof removed.
Numerous urban and regional bus routes depart from the forecourt of the train station. The central bus station is to be redesigned from 2019. The city center of Cuxhaven is located in the west near the train station and the port area to the north and east.
modification
As part of a modernization in 2013, the platforms were fitted with weather protection equipment and benches as well as lighting systems, a guidance system for the blind, information display cases, clocks and dynamic text displays.
