Essel ( Low German Eßel ) is a district of the municipality of Kutenholz in the Stade district ( Lower Saxony ).

Essel is known nationwide for the sports club TSV Essel , whose women's fistball team played in the Bundesliga in the 2016/17 indoor season .

Geographical location

Essel lies on the Stader Geest . In the moor on the northern edge of Essel, two streams arise, which flow into Oste and Schwinge . The otter , which also flows into the Oste, flows through the village itself . The forest area Horner Holz lies between the town and the district border with the Rotenburg (Wümme) district .

Essel is on the L 123, which runs in the northeast via Kutenholz and Bargstedt past Harsefeld to Horneburg and in the west via Hesedorf to Bremervörde to the federal highway 71 .

Essel has a small stop on the Stade – Osterholz – Scharmbeck railway line , where since 1993 only the Moorexperess has been used for tourist purposes.

Administrative history

Before 1852, Essel belonged to the Börde Mulsum in the district of Harsefeld . The Börde Mulsum changed in 1852 to the Stade office , which was added to the Himmelpforten office in 1859 . After 1885 Essel belonged to the district of Stade , since 1932 to today's district of Stade .

Before 1972 Essel was part of the Kutenholz municipality . On July 1, 1972, the new Kutenholz community was formed from the old communities of Kutenholz , Mulsum , Aspe and Essel as part of the regional reform .
