Building details

altar

After the Second Vatican Council , it became necessary to change the chancel in St. Ansgar's Church in Hemmoor-Warstade. With the removal of the communion benches, there was the space required to move the new altar to the front. Thus the priest could celebrate the mass facing the community. The block-like altar table is adorned with a Latin inscription: "Victor quia victima". That means: he is the winner because he was defeated.

Altar cross

The figure of Christ is made of cement. This is the reference to the direct connection between the St. Ansgar Church and the Hemmoor-Warstader cement works, for whose workers this church was built about 100 years ago. The copper altar cross itself is adorned at each of its four ends with ruby-red pieces of raw glass - a reference to the wounds of Christ. The altar cross shows the following design in detail:

  • a stylized crown of thorns
  • The inner edges form - directly around the Christ figure - a mandorla (an almond-shaped design that artists place around a special person to express their grandeur)
  • An oversized heart is supposed to express God's love for people.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font in its function as a holy water font is located near the entrance. On the bronze lid of the baptismal font, in addition to the waters, the crowd of the baptized is depicted. The inscription "All were saved through this water" indicates that baptism allows admission into the Christian community.

window

The life story of St. Ansgar is shown in some pictures in the windows . Starting at the front right you can see the young Ansgar as a convent student. He is said to have felt himself in God's grace throughout his life. When designing the windows, the artist tried to express the fact that he always felt God above him in the arch of the respective window. In the second picture (next to the organ) Ansgar can be seen as a young teacher in whom the divine ray of grace is thrown on his student. Ansgar was already a monk and teacher at Corvey Abbey at the age of 22 . The third picture shows him sent out as a missionary on a ship to bring the cross to the northernmost countries of Europe. Ansgar's ordination as bishop of Hamburg can be seen on the fourth window. The last window in the Lady Chapel shows the lights that Ansgar had put up around his death bed.
