Resection of the cheek pouch

The cheek pouch prolapse is a pathological protrusion of the cheek pouch in hamsters . The cause is usually sticky lining that clogs the cheek pouch. The animal then tries to massage the cheek pouch with its front paws, which leads to the incident. It shows itself in a bubble-shaped sack that oozes out of the mouth opening.

Within 48 hours, a back displacement (may reduction ) of the cheek pouch be attempted before that should mucosa with isotonic saline solution to be rinsed. If there is another incident, the cheek pouch can be fixed in place with skin staples made of absorbable suture material in the lateral neck area. If the incident is older or the mucous membrane is necrotic , removal ( resection ) of the cheek pouch is indicated.
