The Time of the Colorful Birds (Original title: Where the Heart Is) is an American comedy film from 1990 . Directed by John Boorman , who wrote the script together with his daughter Telsche Boorman .
action
New York demolition entrepreneur Stewart McBain runs his own real estate company. He has only one purpose in life: to make money so that his three children lack nothing. The spoiled offspring trio enjoys the comfortable life in abundance and makes no move to change that.
The protests of the population prevent Stewart McBain from demolishing the architecturally valuable Dutch House in Brooklyn , which should give way to a new building. His adult children Daphne, Chloe and Jimmy mock his appearance on television, which Stewart is fed up with and sends his children out of the house to learn to stand on their own two feet. They move into the Dutch House , which their father has given them. For lack of money, they rent some apartments in the run-down house. The tenants include the fashion designer Lionel and the magician Shitty.
Chloe prepares a calendar for an insurance company; some roommates act as models . Meanwhile, Stewart's company goes bankrupt and he loses his house. His children take him in at the Dutch House . In the end the family will be united and wealthy again.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on February 23, 1990 that the film should be shot according to the original plans in London , where the characters would appear believable. Moving the story to New York was a mistake. The script has British overtones - especially in the way the characters are viewed. The characters of Stewart, Chloe, Lionel and Daphne are not suitable for amusing the audience; their behavior is too plausible and normal for a comedy.
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film uses " the naive gaze of a modern fairy tale to tell critically about the values of the city dwellers at the end of the 20th century ". He vacillates “ too indecisively between social satire and social fairy tale ”, which is why he loses “ in terms of content and human depth ”. The " good acting performances " can " arouse interest ".
