A Month by the Lake ( A Month by the Lake ) is an American-British film comedy by John Irvin from the year 1995 .
action
Miss Bentley has been spending her vacation in Signora Fascioli's inn on Lake Como for years . Since her father recently passed away, this time, in 1937, she has to rely on the company of Italians.
Major Wilshaw, British, arrives as a new guest. Miss Bentley is interested in him. She watches him and slowly builds up a tender bond with him, but does not dare to reveal herself to him because the major does not clearly admit himself.
When the young American Miss Beaumont arrives as a nanny for the Italian offspring, Miss Bentley is irritated by the contact between the two. Major Wilshaw announces that he will have to return to England. On departure, Miss Beaumont flirts with him, which causes him to postpone his departure, as he has hopes to win her heart. Meanwhile, a young Italian man tries to seduce Miss Bentley, to which she does not respond, but uses this to get the major's attention. After some back and forth, the Major and Miss Bentley admit their affection.
Reviews
James Berardinelli described the comedy on ReelViews as "frivolous" and "romantic". The pace of the first half of the film is "slow". Berardinelli criticized the representations of Edward Fox and Uma Thurman.
Roger Ebert described the film in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 29, 1995 as a "sly romantic comedy" about the clash of sex, ego, will and pride. The film lives from the very British style and the "eccentricity" of the characters, which would differ from the contemporary tourists. No sex scenes are shown, only flirting, which is more interesting for the audience.
Awards
Vanessa Redgrave was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1996.
