David Greene (Director)

David Greene (born February 22, 1921 in Manchester as Lucius David Syms Brian Lederman , † April 7, 2003 in Ojai , California ) was a British film director , screenwriter and film producer . He has directed over 80 productions for film and television, including films such as The Locked Door , The Mysterious Mr. Sebastian and U-Boot in Not . For his numerous television productions, he won four Emmys and several nominations.

life and work

David Greene, born in Manchester in 1921, began his acting career in Lance Comfort's drama Daughter of Darkness in 1948 , starred a year later in Fergus McDonell's thriller The Voice of Conscience alongside Valerie Hobson and James Donald and in several other smaller British film productions in the early 1950s, before emigrating to Canada in 1953 to go behind the camera. In Toronto he was trained in television productions of the CBC , then he moved to California as a director.

In Hollywood, Greene was best known for film and television productions. Among the films were: Scandal at Scotland Yard with Michael York , The Steps of the Murderer with Jenny Agutter and Simon Ward , Godspell - Follow the Lord! with Victor Garber , U-Boot in Not with Charlton Heston and David Carradine or Jodie - Somewhere in Texas with Jan-Michael Vincent and the young Kim Basinger , who was at the beginning of her Hollywood career.

Greene also directed dozens of episodes from well-known television series in his long career , including episodes from Twilight Zone , Simon Templar , Preston & Preston , Die 2 , Reich & Arm , Ellery Queen or for the series Roots for which he is one of his four Emmy -Awards won.

From the mid-1970s to the end of the 1990s, numerous television films followed, such as the 1975 television adaptation of Alexandre Dumas ' classic novel The Count of Monte Cristo with Richard Chamberlain , Trevor Howard , Louis Jourdan , Donald Pleasence and Tony Curtis , 1982 Rehearsal for a murder with Robert Preston and Lynn Redgrave , 1983 His Friend the Robot with Christopher Plummer , 1988 Liberace again with Victor Garber and 1992 The Fourth Commandment with Sharon Gless and William McNamara . When David Greene died on April 7, 2003 at the age of 82 in Ojai , California , he left behind his wife Kelly and four children.
