Plants of Secrets - The Day of the Triffids (orig. The Day of the Triffids is) a British science fiction - miniseries from 2009, based on the novel " The Day of the Triffids " by John Wyndham is based.

action

The oil industry uses genetically modified plants, the so-called triffids, from which oil can be extracted with high efficiency. However, the Triffids must be grown and kept in protected and guarded farms, as they are carnivorous plants that can move independently and attack people. One day, Bill Masen, the head of one of these farms, is attacked by a Triffid and almost loses his sight. He is being treated in the hospital and his eyes are blindfolded for 24 hours.

When a particularly strong solar storm hits the earth at this time, all people who watch this spectacle - spurred on by the media - go blind because of the bright light hitting the earth. All of London is sinking into chaos. There is apparently no hope of salvation because almost all people around the world are blind. They die of hunger, kill each other, die from a mysterious plague - and from the Triffids. Because with the loss of sight, people have also lost their superiority over the Triffids.

The researcher Bill Masen was able to escape the bright light of the storm through his treatment in the hospital. With the help of radio presenter Jo Playton, who is also not blind, he tries to stop the Triffids.

production

In November 2009 the BBC announced that it would shoot a new version of the film. A budget of £ 15,000,000 has been estimated for this. For the film were Dougray Scott and Joely Richardson cast in the leading roles. Furthermore, the comedian Eddie Izzard was hired for the film.
