Rachel Kempson (born May 28, 1910 in Dartmouth , Great Britain , † May 24, 2003 in Millbrook , New York , USA ) was a British actress .

Life

Rachel Kempson was born to Beatrice Hamilton, nee Ashwell , and Eric William Edward Kempson. She studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company . In 1935 she married Michael Redgrave and appeared on stage with him several times. She remained married to Redgrave until his death in 1985. From this marriage, the actresses Vanessa Redgrave and Lynn Redgrave and the actor Corin Redgrave emerged. After first appearing primarily in the theater, Kempson began to work increasingly in film and television productions from the 1960s. Her best-known roles include the wife of James Mason in Georgy Girl (1966), the Earl's sister Lady Lorradaile in the Christmas classic The Little Lord (1980) and Lady Belfield in Out of Africa (1986) with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford .

In 1959 her husband was knighted and she became - formally - Lady Redgrave. However, she did not officially use this courtesy title . In 1986 Kempson's autobiography Life Among the Redgraves was published by Dutton. In 1997 she had her last film appearance. She died of a stroke in 2003 at the age of 92 at her granddaughter Natasha Richardson's home .
