The Jewish Defense League ( JDL , on German JDL ) is a kahanistische organization whose stated goal is to Jews in the Diaspora by all means against anti-Semitism to protect that are considered this to be necessary.

Terrorism allegations

The original goal of the founder Rabbi Meir Kahane was to protect Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn in the 1960s from attacks and growing anti-Semitism. Since the organization was founded, members of the JDL have repeatedly been involved in numerous violent attacks on African-American gangs, neo-Nazis , representatives of the former Soviet Union and Muslims . A number of attempted terrorist attacks are attributed to the JDL, but this is always rejected by the JDL.

The massacre committed by Baruch Goldstein in Hebron in 1994 is justified by the JDL as a “ preventive strike ”. According to the JDL, the perpetrator only acted preventively by murdering 29 praying Arabs, since otherwise an attack by the local Arabs on the Israeli settlers in Hebron would have been imminent. Goldstein was once a member of the JDL himself. Graffiti by the JDL can be found in Hebron to this day, with which “Arabs in the gas chambers!” Is demanded.

In addition to the JDL, the Israeli Kach party and the associated organization Kahane Chai (Kahane lives), which the Israeli government declared illegal after the Hebron massacre, exist as a political arm .

In its official publications, the JDL condemns all forms of terrorism and racism. The FBI, on the other hand, described the organization in its 2000/2001 terrorism report as a “violent, extremist Jewish organization” and connected the JDL leadership with at least one foiled terrorist attack. FBI statistics show that from 1980 to 1985 there were 18 terrorist attacks by Jews in the United States, 15 of which were committed by JDL members.

The JDL is overseen by the anti-racist organization Southern Poverty Law Center .

Then Bill Maniaci took over the chairmanship. When he resigned, Matt Finberg became chairman, followed by Ian Sigel .

Important events

In 1978, the then JDL chairman Victor Vancier went to prison when he tried to prevent the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Sinai by bombing Egyptian targets in the USA. He was released from prison in 1983 and re-chaired the JDL in 1984.

On December 31, 1975, 15 JDL members occupied the office of the permanent assessor of Vatican City within the UN, John Cheli, to protest for the papal recognition of Israeli purposes after they had ousted it. After an hour, however, they withdrew again because Cheli had called the police and the JDL had agreed with him that he would be Pope Paul VI. submits a report written by her. Among other things, the report contained criticism that the Pope had previously asked the Israelis to recognize Palestinian rights.

On March 16, 1978 , in the face of an American Nazi Party march in Skokie , Irv Rubin offered a bounty of $ 500 to anyone who "kills, maimed, or seriously injured" an ANP member. Rubin was charged with incitement to murder, but was acquitted in 1981.

On October 11, 1985, anti-discrimination activist Alex Odeh of Arab descent was killed in a bomb attack in Santa Ana, California. He was the district chairman of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC). Irv Rubin said that he had no sympathy for Odeh. In Rubin's view, Odeh “got what he deserved”. The FBI suspected the JDL behind the crime, but could not find sufficient evidence.

In 1987 Victor Vancier was arrested again and sentenced to ten years in prison for six bombing raids on Soviet targets, but was paroled after five and a half years. The attacks were intended to induce the Soviet Union to allow Soviet Jews to emigrate. Due to the damage to its image, the JDL began to distance itself from Vancier. After his release, he founded the Jewish Task Force (JTF).

In 1995 there was an arson attack on the home of the Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel in Toronto, which caused damage of 400,000 dollars. A group called the Jewish Armed Resistance Movement claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the Canadian newspaper Toronto Sun , the group had contacts with the JDL and Kahane Chai . Meir Weinstein , the leader of the JDL in Toronto, denied involvement in the attack, but was caught trying to break into Zündel five days later, together with the American JDL leader Irv Rubin, and was therefore arrested by the police.

In 2001 bomb attacks on the office of Arab-born Congress member Darrell Issa and the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City , California were prevented. JDL chairman Irv Rubin and Earl Krugel were charged as suspects . Both were arrested as part of a covert operation in which an FBI informant delivered explosives to Krugel's Los Angeles home. Rubin claimed to be innocent. In November 2002, before a court hearing, he officially committed suicide by cutting his throat and jumping out of a window on the second floor. A few days later, on November 13th, he succumbed to his injuries. Rubin's family doubts that he took his own life. The other defendant, Earl Krugel, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2005 and murdered in prison that same year on November 4th.

In October 2004, the JDL split into two competing groups, both of which operated under the same name.

In April 2005, the original Internet domain was terminated by its operator Network Solutions due to alleged legal violations; a short time later the new domain went online.

In 2006 the group B'nai Elim was founded, which is supported by most of the former supporters of the JDL under Irv Rubin.

The France-based JDL, Ligue de Défense Juive (LDJ), is similar to the original JDL under Rabbi Meir Kahane. Its self-declared task is to protect the French Jewish community from the permanent attacks of anti-Semitic groups such as Tribu Ka, which take place especially in Paris . The LDJ is more offensive than defensive by its method and is supported by a section of French Jews. In recent years there have been many positive articles in the Israeli and UK media related to the LDJ. However, in 2010 a group of young Jews in France were suspected of the murder of Said Bourarach. They were accused of murdering the Muslim Bourarach out of racist motivation. At least two of the suspects appear to have had contacts with the Ligue de Défense Juive.

In January 2011, the Canadian JDL held a rally in support of the Islamophobic English Defense League (EDL).

In April 2011, the Canadian JDL held a protest against Toronto Gay Pride . The reason for this was the fact that the Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (" Queers Against Israeli Apartheid ") had participated in the event. The JDL urged the other homosexual participants to condemn this group and announced that they would continue to protest against the event until it happened. Because this did not happen, however, the JDL made numerous anti-gay statements against the Pride participants during the protest. In 2012, two members of the JDL planted a bomb in the car of French journalist Jonathan Moadab in Paris . The perpetrators were sentenced to six and ten months in prison.
