Daviess County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Owensboro , named after Colonel Abraham Owen , killed at the Battle of Tippecanoe .

The county is located in west central Kentucky, bordering Indiana to the north , separated by the Ohio River and has an area of ​​1,234 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hancock County , Ohio County , McLean County, and Henderson County .

history

Daviess County was formed on January 14, 1815 from parts of Ohio County. It was named after Colonel Joseph Hamilton Daviess . In 1936, the last public execution by hanging in the USA was carried out here on the 23-year-old Black Rainey Bethea for the robbery and murder of an elderly white woman.

As of the 2000 census , Daviess County had 91,545 people in 36,033 households and 24,826 families. The population density was 76 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.69 percent white, 4.35 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.44 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,813 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,404. Males had a median income of $ 35,295 versus $ 21,971 for females.
