Cumberland County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Burkesville , named after Samuel Burks , an early settler in the area. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southern Kentucky, borders the state of Tennessee to the south and has an area of 805 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Adair County , Russell County , Clinton County , Monroe County, and Metcalfe Counties .
history
Cumberland County was formed on December 14, 1796 from parts of Green County. It was named after the Cumberland River .
Three buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 6, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Cumberland County had 7,147 people in 2,976 households and 2,038 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.28 percent white, 3.41 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60 percent of the population.
Of the 2,976 households, 29.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.0 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, 31.5 percent were non-families, 28.9 percent were single households and 14.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 89.1 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 21,572 , and the median income for a family is $ 28,701. Males had a median income of $ 21,313 versus $ 16,548 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,643. 16.4 percent of families and 23.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 30.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 33.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
