Rexton is a village ( Village ) in the Canadian province of New Brunswick with 818 inhabitants (2011).

geography

Rexton is located in Kent County on the southern edge of Kouchibouguac National Park and just before the mouth of the Richibucto River in the Northumberland Strait . Miramichi is around 60 kilometers to the northwest . Bouctouche in the southeast and Moncton in the south are 25 and 65 kilometers away. The connecting roads New Brunswick Route 11 , New Brunswick Route 116 and New Brunswick Route 134 run through Rexton. Eight kilometers away is the nearly 1,664 hectares in the southwest Elsipogtog First Nation- -Reservat, in which around 2,000 descendants Mi'kmaqindianer live.

history

The Mi'kmaq Indians were the indigenous people of the area. Around 1825 settlers settled and named the place Kingston . To avoid confusion with Kings County to the south, the name part King (King) was replaced by its Latin equivalent Rex in 1901 . Since then the place has been called Rexton. Due to the proximity to the water, shipbuilding became the main livelihood of the inhabitants for a long time. In 1966 the place received the status of Village .

In October 2013 there were violent protests and road blockades in Rexton, especially by the First Nations , against planned test wells that were supposed to investigate the possibility of gas extraction using the hydraulic fracturing method ( "fracking" ).

Today the place is also active in tourism and offers tours through the dune landscape along the coast and into the Kouchibouguac National Park.
