History of the memorial
On July 17, 1916, a memorial was designated as Abraham Lincoln National Park , which was subsequently administered by the War Department . In 1933 the administration was transferred to the National Park Service . In 1939 the memorial was rededicated as a National Historical Park and named Abraham Lincoln National Historical Park . From September 8, 1959 to March 30, 2009, it was downgraded to a National Historic Site before it was re-designated as a National Historical Park in the 200th year of Lincoln's birth .
The foundation stone for the memorial building was laid in 1909 on the 100th birthday of Lincoln by President Theodore Roosevelt ; it was completed in 1911 and inaugurated by President William Howard Taft . At that time it was believed that the hut in the memorial was the original.
