Floyd County is a county in the US state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Prestonsburg , named after John Preston , who made the land available for the city.

The county is located almost in the far east of Kentucky, about 30 km to the southeast from Virginia , about 35 km to the northeast from West Virginia , and has an area of 1024 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water.
It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Johnson County , Martin County , Pike County , Knott County, and Magoffin Counties .
history
Floyd County was formed on December 13, 1799 from parts of Fleming County, Mason County and Montgomery County. It was named after John Floyd , a military leader.
On November 8 and 9, 1861, a battle between Union troops and the Confederates took place near Ivy Mountain and Ivy Creek as part of the Civil War . The battle ended with a victory for the Union troops and nearly 300 dead. Another skirmish took place on January 10, 1862, with 92 dead.
Floyd County has a National Historic Landmark , the Middle Creek Battlefield . A total of 15 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 7, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Floyd County had 42,441 people in 16,881 households and 12,272 families. The population density was 42 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.73 percent white, 1.29 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.42 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.61 percent of the population.
Of the 16,881 households, 33.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.5 percent were married couples living together, 12.3 percent were single mothers, 27.3 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent were single households, and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.0 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 21,168 , and the median income for a family was $ 25,717. Males had a median income of $ 30,242 versus $ 20,569 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,442. 26.9 percent of families and 30.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 39.8 percent of these were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 20.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
