Radcliff is a city in Hardin County in the US state of Kentucky , which is historically, economically and demographically shaped by the nearby military base Fort Knox . According to the population census of 2000 , 21,961 people lived in the city.
geography
The city is at 37 ° 49'48 "North, and 85 ° 56'44" West. (37.829918, -85.945541). The city extends over an area of 29.7 km², 29.6 km² of which is land and 0.09 percent is water.
history
The city is a relatively young community and owes its existence directly to the neighboring military base. It only began in 1919 when a certain Horace McCullum had some parcels of land on what is now Wilson Avenue divided and auctioned off to the public. This settlement called McCullum in honor of his friend, Major William Radcliffe, the battalion commander of the newly established Corps at Camp Henry Knox, Radcliff . After McCullum also sold the large supermarket that he had specially opened in the newly founded city, McCullum played no further role in the development of Radcliff.
In the 1930s, the face of the city was changed by numerous migrants from the original neighboring small towns of Stithton and New Stithton. Fort Knox had expanded so much that the local communities there were literally taken over. During World War II , Radcliff benefited significantly from the thousands of soldiers who spent their free time in town and paid their wages there .
In 1988 the city came into the limelight due to an unusual incident: In one of the worst traffic accidents ever caused by a drunk driver in the United States, a wrong-way driver collided with a bus on Interstate 71. As a result of the accident and the subsequent fire, 27 mostly young members of a community in Radcliff ("First Assembly of God") were killed.

The city's economy is largely shaped by the army base in Fort Knox and the corresponding businesses in the service industry.
