Martin County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Inez , which was named after the daughter of a postmaster in a neighboring town. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in east Kentucky, borders West Virginia and covers an area of 598 square kilometers with no significant water surface. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lawrence Counties , Pike Counties , Floyd Counties , and Johnson Counties .

history

Martin County was formed on March 10, 1870 from parts of Floyd County, Johnson County, Lawrence County, and Pike County. It was named after John P. Martin , a member of the US Congress .

Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 12, 2017).

Martin County's population was 12,578 as of the 2000 census . 84 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,776 households and 3,620 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.25 percent white, 0.03 percent African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.01 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.62 percent of the population.

Of the 4,776 households, 39.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers, 24.2 percent were non-families, 21.8 percent were single households and 8.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.05.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 92.1 men.
