Holmes County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Millersburg . Holmes County has the highest concentration of Amish settlements in the world .

The county is located in northeast Ohio and has an area of ​​1098 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wayne County , Stark County , Tuscarawas County , Coshocton County , Knox County, and Ashland Counties .

history

Holmes County was formed on January 20, 1824 from parts of Coshocton, Tuscarawas and Wayne Counties and finally organized the following year. It was named after Andrew Holmes , an officer in the British-American War .

According to the 2000 census , Holmes County had 38,943 people in 11,337 households and 9,194 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.03 percent white, 0.33 percent African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.40 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.75 percent of the population.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,944 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,230. Males had a median income of $ 28,490 versus $ 20,602 for females.
