Highland County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Hillsboro .

The county is located south-southwest of the geographic center of Ohio, about 50 km to the south from the Kentucky border and has an area of 1,445 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Fayette County , Ross County , Pike County , Adams County , Brown County, and Clinton Counties .
history
Highland County was formed on February 18, 1805 from parts of Adams, Clermont and Ross Counties. It was named after the hilly land between the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers .

According to the 2000 census , Highland County had 40,875 people in 15,587 households and 11,394 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.88 percent white, 1.50 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.53 percent of the population.
Of the 15,587 households, 34.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.3 percent were single mothers, 26.9 percent were non-families, 23.2 percent were single households, and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.04.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 35,313 USD , and the median income for a family was 41,091 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,541 versus $ 22,842 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,521. 9.0 percent of families and 11.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 15.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
