Location of Winesburg in Ohio

Winesburg is a place ( unincorporated community ) with 67 inhabitants ( as of 2000 census ), of the Paint Township in Holmes County , Ohio , United States belongs. The place is on a hill in a predominantly Amish populated region of Ohio on US Highway 62 .

history

The place was founded in the early 19th century and was originally called Weinsberg , after the German town of Weinsberg near Heilbronn . In 1833 it was renamed Winesburg by the American postal authorities when a post office was opened there.

Winesburg is known as the namesake of the book Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson . This collection of interconnected short stories about residents of a fictional small town set in the early 20th century is named for Winesburg but is actually based on the small town of Clyde, Ohio , where Anderson grew up.
