Lake County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Painesville .

The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Ohio, borders in the north on Lake Erie , the southernmost of the 5 Great Lakes and has an area of 2535 square kilometers, of which 1944 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Ashtabula County , Geauga County, and Cuyahoga County .

history

Lake County was formed on March 6, 1840 from parts of Cuyahoga County and Geauga County. It was named after its location on Lake Erie , the southernmost of the five Great Lakes .

There is a National Historic Site in the county , the James A. Garfield National Historic Site . In addition to this, another place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Kirtland Temple . 80 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 5, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Lake County had 227,511 people in 89,700 households and 62,520 families. The population density was 385 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.40 percent white, 1.99 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.90 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.66 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.92 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.70 percent of the population.

Of the 89,700 households, 31.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 30.3 percent were non-families, 25.6 percent were single households and 9.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.03.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 91.5 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,763 , and the median income for a family is $ 57,134. Males had a median income of $ 40,916 versus $ 28,434 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,160. 3.5 percent of families and 5.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 6.5 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 5.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
