Jefferson is a locality in Ashtabula County , Ohio , United States . The population was 3,572 at the 2000 census . It is the county seat of Ashtabula County.
history
Jefferson has been the county seat since Ashtabula County was founded in 1807. The first administration building was built in 1811.
Jefferson is on a railroad line and near Lake Erie . Even so, the place grew very slowly. Around 1880 only about 1000 people lived in the village. Many farmers from the area bought seeds for their fields here. Even in the 20th century, the population of Jefferson did not increase significantly, while the neighboring towns of Ashtabula and Conneaut had a significantly larger population. Today the population of Jefferson is even declining, as many residents move to the larger towns of Ohio because there are better opportunities to earn money.
