Conneaut ( pronunciation : [ kɒniɔːt ]) is a city in Ashtabula County in the US -amerikanischen State Ohio .
geography
The city is located on the south bank of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Conneaut Creek , just a few kilometers from the border with the eastern state of Pennsylvania . The area of the city includes more than 11 km of coastline of Lake Erie, along with beaches, jetties and summer tourist activities. The area of the city is crossed by Interstate 90 , which runs south of the city center.
The city has almost 13,000 inhabitants (as of the 2000 census ).
history
Conneaut is on an ancient Native American trail that was also used by European settlers on their way west. Around 1747 there was a village of the Missisauga , a tribe related to the Chippewa , near today's Conneaut .
In the 19th century, the Port of Conneaut, along with the ports of Cleveland and Ashtabula, were the main ore ports on Lake Erie, while Toledo and Sandusky were the main coal ports.
On March 27, 1953, a serious railway accident occurred near Conneaut when a freight train's lost cargo derailed two passenger trains . 21 people died.
