Laurentius Kirchhoff , also: Kerkhof; Kirchhof, Kirchov Coementerius (* around 1528 in Rostock ; † October 15, 1580 ibid) was a German legal scholar.

Life

The son of Rostock councilor Bartel Kerkhof came from an old Rostock patrician family. He had enrolled at the University of Rostock in 1545 , switched to the University of Leipzig in the winter semester of 1549 and did further studies at the University of Cologne . He then attended French and Italian universities, where he may have obtained a doctorate in law. In Rome his fame had become so great that the Rostock council wrote to him and asked him to give lectures in his homeland. In 1559 he returned, became a lawyer and was given a council professorship in Rostock.

However, he resigned from this position and became Mecklenburg councilor to Duke Johann Albrecht I of Mecklenburg , who valued him for his significant legal knowledge and business fluency. In 1568 he was appointed professor of the Codex at Rostock University. The appointment, however, was not compatible with the regular staffing of the faculty of law. Friedrich Hein , who was to be dismissed in his place, insisted on continuing his official appointment. Therefore, Kirchhof initially worked as an associate professor.

It was not until Hein left the faculty that Kerkhoff became a full professor of the Codex on June 11, 1575. As a civil lawyer, he enjoyed an excellent reputation. In his few writings one recognizes the sharpness and clarity of his legal conception. Not least because of this, his legal concerns were highly regarded not only in Germany, but also in France and Italy. Thus they contributed to the reputation of the Rostock University. After he was rector of the Rostock University in the winter semesters 1561, 1562, and in the summer semesters 1562 and 1580 , he died in office.

He was married to Justine , a daughter of the Lübeck Syndicus Johann Rudel .
