Johann Gottlob Wilhelm Dunkel

Johann Gottlob Wilhelm Dunkel (born September 28, 1720 in Koethen , † September 8, 1759 in Wulfen ) was a German Protestant theologian and historian.

Life

The son of the businessman Johann Christian Dunkel graduated from the University of Halle with a degree in philosophy and theology in 1738 , where he acquired the degree of master's degree in philosophical sciences in 1739 . He then became a private tutor in Berlin and wrote several essays on historical and antiquarian topics at that time. In 1744 he became a preacher in Diebzig . He turned down appointments to academic degrees in Moscow and The Hague. In 1748 he became pastor in Wulfen and Drosen. In 1753 his best-known work, Historical-Critical Messages from Deceased Scholars and their Writings, appeared . In addition, the Latin Society in Jena and in the following year the learned society in Augsburg accepted him as a member. He was married on February 11, 1749 to Johanna Elisabeth, the daughter of the head of the excise office in Köthen, Johann Bernhard Nüßler.

Having suffered from hypochondriac seizures, he committed suicide.
