Starting position

One of the freight cars on the freight train, a stake car , was loaded with large pipes. When loading, these were stacked about 1.50 meters too high and not properly attached. This was not complained about by any railway employee on the way. At the scene of the accident, pipes came loose, fell down and wedged themselves between the moving train and the neighboring track. This was moved by about 45 cm. Immediately afterwards the Mohawk drove on the spot at about 120 km / h and derailed . Debris from the pipes and the damaged train also fell on the other two tracks. The Southwestern Limited drove into there at about 110 km / h and also derailed. Only the last three cars remained on the track. A total of seven passenger coaches were destroyed.
