Henry Lloyd (born February 21, 1852 in Dorchester County , Maryland , † December 30, 1920 in Cambridge , Maryland) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1885 to 1888 the 40th governor of the state of Maryland.

Early years and political advancement

Henry Lloyd was the grandson of Edward Lloyd , who was governor of Maryland between 1809 and 1811. He attended the Cambridge Academy until 1871 . After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1873. He then began to practice in Cambridge. Between 1875 and 1881 he was employed by the Auditor of the Court . Between 1882 and 1884 he was a member of the Maryland Senate and became its President.

Governor of maryland

Following the resignation of Governor Robert Milligan McLane , Lloyd had to take over the governor's office as Senate President under the constitution. On January 21, 1886, he was officially authorized by the legislature to end the term of office of his predecessor. Thus he was between March 27, 1885 and January 11, 1888 governor of his state. During his tenure, child labor was reduced to a maximum of ten hours a day and laws were passed to control the tobacco industry and oyster fishing.

After the end of his governorship, Lloyd withdrew from politics. Between 1892 and 1908 he was a judge in the Maryland State's First Judicial District. He then retired. Henry Lloyd died in December 1920. He and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Staplefort, had one child.

Lloyd belonged to a politician dynasty in Maryland. The progenitor was Edward Lloyd II (1670-1718), who was colonial governor of the Province of Maryland from 1709 to 1714 . His son Edward Lloyd III (1711-1770) was the father of Edward Lloyd IV (1744-1796). This was 1783-84 delegate for Maryland in the Continental Congress . His son Edward Lloyd V (1779-1834), so the great-grandson of the colonial governor, was between 1809 and 1811 governor of the US state of Maryland . After all, Henry Lloyd was his grandson.
