Edward Lloyd (politician, 1744)

Edward Lloyd IV (born December 15, 1744 in Talbot County , Province of Maryland , †  July 8, 1796 ibid) was an American politician . In 1783 and 1784 he was a delegate for Maryland to the Continental Congress .

Career

Edward Lloyd was the father of the same name Edward Lloyd (1779-1834), who became governor of Maryland and represented this state in both chambers of the US Congress . He was born on the Wye House plantation in Talbot County and attended public schools in his home country. Later he worked as a planter . Between 1771 and 1774 he was a member of the Maryland colonial House of Representatives. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1775 he became a member of the local security committee and in 1776 in the provincial congress of his homeland. From 1777 to 1779 he was a member of the government council of his state ( Executive Council) to the Maryland House of Representatives in 1780 . In 1781, 1786, and 1791 he was a member of the State Senate . He also represented Maryland in 1783 and 1784 in the Continental Congress. In 1788 he was also a member of the congregation that ratified the United States Constitution for Maryland. Edward Lloyd died on July 8, 1796 on his Wye House plantation .

Lloyd belonged to a politician dynasty in Maryland. The progenitor was Edward Lloyd II (1670-1718), who was colonial governor of the Province of Maryland from 1709 to 1714 . His son Edward Lloyd III (1711-1770) was the father of Edward Lloyd IV (1744-1796). This was 1783-84 delegate for Maryland in the Continental Congress . His son Edward Lloyd V (1779-1834), so the great-grandson of the colonial governor, was between 1809 and 1811 governor of the US state of Maryland . After all, his grandson Henry Lloyd (1852–1920) was also Governor of Maryland from 1885 to 1888. This series includes six generations.
