John Lee Carroll (1908)

John Lee Carroll (born September 30, 1830 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  February 27, 1911 in Washington DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1876 to 1880 governor of the state of Maryland.

Life

Early years and political advancement

John Carroll attended Mount St. Mary's College in Maryland and Georgetown University in Washington. He then studied law until 1851 at Harvard University . After his admission to the bar, he began working in his new profession in Baltimore and New York City .

Between 1868 and 1876 he was a member of the Maryland Senate , from 1874 he was President of this chamber. On November 2, 1875, he was elected the new governor of his state.

Governor of maryland

John Carroll began his four-year term on January 12, 1876. During this time, a border conflict with the neighboring state of Virginia was settled. The Maryland Senate was modernized and Johns Hopkins University was established. A railway strike sparked violent clashes on both sides. The governor used the National Guard to end the strike. This further exacerbated the conflict. In the end, federal troops were deployed to crush the strike. Carroll's tenure ended on January 14, 1880.

Another résumé

After his governorship, Carroll served on the Howard County School Board . He was also a director of Patapsco National Bank . In 1892 he was one of the Democratic electors in the presidential election. John Carroll died in Washington in February 1911. He was married twice and had a total of eight children.
