Wabasha is a city in the US state of Minnesota on the upper Mississippi . It is the administrative seat of the county of the same name . The city is not far from the mouth of the Chippewa River , which flows into the Mississippi on the opposite bank in the state of Wisconsin .

Wabasha lies below Lake Pepin , a natural reservoir of the Mississippi, which lies on the border between the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The city of Wabasha covers an area of 24.1 square kilometers (of which 21.1 square kilometers are land area).
history
Wabasha is considered one of the oldest cities on the Upper Mississippi. The first permanent settlement was established in 1826 when Augustin Rocque, the son of a Frenchman and the daughter of Sioux chief Wapashaw, settled there. With the second treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1830 it became a recognized locality. In 1843 the place was named Wabashaw in memory of the chief. This name lasted until 1868, when it was adapted to the current spelling.

According to the 2000 census , Wabasha has 2599 people in 1062 households and 665 families. Ethnically speaking, the population is made up of 98 percent white population and smaller minorities. 0.5 percent of the population are Hispanics .

The city was used as the location for the films Crazy Couple and Third Spring - Friends, Enemies, Fish & Women . The scriptwriter was each Mark Steven Johnson, whose grandfather Charles Gilbert from Wabasha served as a literary role model.
