Philip Alexander "Phil" Liggett , MBE (born August 11, 1943 in Bebington ) is an English sports journalist and commentator as well as a former cyclist .

Journalistic career

Phil Liggett was an amateur cyclist and already had a professional contract under his belt when he decided to become a journalist. He began his career with cycling magazine Cycling and freelanced for The Guardian , The Daily Telegraph and The Observer . In 1997 he became the international editor of Cycle Sport . He also writes books.

Liggett also works as a television commentator. By 2012 he reported on 13 Olympic Games and - together with Paul Sherwen - 40 events of the Tour de France . He also comments on other sports such as triathlon and ski jumping . He works in the UK for ITV , for US broadcasters such as ABC , CBS and NBC, and for Australian broadcasters. 2014 he commented, together with the Dutch journalist José terminating the live stream of the International Cycling Union International Cycling Union (UCI) of the 2014 UCI Road World Championships in Spain Ponferrada .

Phil Liggett is known for his colorful expression with literary allusions. In 2005 a collection of his Liggettisms was published in a book.

Engagement in cycling

From 1972 to 1993 Liggett was the sporting director of the Milk Race . Through his involvement in organizing cycling races, he became Vice-President of the Association Internationale Organisateurs des Courses Cycliste . In 1973, at the age of 30, he became the youngest UCI commissioner to date . He was also President of the Cyclists' Touring Club (CTC).

Liggett and Armstrong

Liggett was a supporter of Lance Armstrong for years and was committed to his Livestrong Foundation . In October 2012, however, he said he found it unlikely that Armstrong should never have doped. He said he was disappointed that Armstrong lied to him when he questioned him about doping in 2003. He was interviewed for the Australian film The World According to Lance .

Phil Liggett lives in Hertfordshire but also has a house and a farm in South Africa . He was named an MBE in 2005 and inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame in 2009 .
