Adrien Costa (born August 19, 1997 in Stanford , California ) is a retired American cyclist.

Athletic career

In 2013, Adrien Costa was a two-time US champion in the individual time trial and road race . In 2014 and 2015 he was runner-up in the individual time trial.

In 2016, at the age of 18, Costa became the first American in its 50-year history to win the Tour de Bretagne Cycliste elite race . At the end of 2017, Costa announced his retirement from competitive cycling due to motivation problems. After the fatal accident of his teammate Chad Young in April 2017, he had not contested a race.

Study and accident

After finishing his cycling career, Adrien Costa began studying Outdoor Leadership and Tourism at Oregon State University .

On July 29, 2018, Costa had a mountaineering accident in Mono County ( California ). His right leg was pinched by a 4,000-pound rock. As a result, this leg had to be amputated above the knee. His former team Axeon Hagens Berman initiated a fundraising campaign for him. Three months after losing his leg, Costa was already on his bike with a prosthesis, and he is also climbing and skiing again .
