The Luxembourg District was from its inception in 1843 until the abolition on October 3, 2015, the district of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg , the western Gutland included. It consisted of the cantons of Luxembourg , Esch an der Alzette , Capellen and Mersch .
The district bordered the Diekirch district in the north, the Grevenmacher district in the east, the Lorraine region ( France ) in the south and the Belgian province of Luxembourg in the west .
