Carl Conti
Carl Conti , also Karl Conti (born April 17, 1741 in Vienna ; † October 26, 1795 there ), was an Austrian engraver .
Life
Carl Conti's father came from Lorraine , probably came to Vienna with the court of Franz Stephen of Lorraine and worked as the first confectioner at the imperial court . Conti initially trained as a painter before studying with Jacob Matthias Schmutzer at his copper engraving academy in Vienna from 1766 .
He worked from 1778 to 1786 as a proofreader and from 1787 to 1795 as an adjunct at the copper engraving school of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . He also taught drawing at the academy. His copper engraving, dedicated to Joseph von Sperges , based on the painting Assault on Travelers by the baroque painter Philips Wouwerman, found widespread use . He also created several etchings around 1790 with the Upper Austrian motifs Gmunden , Lambach and Traunfall .
In 1780 Conti married Theresia Ueberracker (1762–1835) from Vienna. In addition to his wife, three of his children survived him.
The poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was a contemporary of Carl Conti and possibly named the figure of the painter Conti in his tragedy Emilia Galotti after him. The Contiweg traffic route in Vienna- Aspern has been named after Carl Conti since 1934 .
