Johann Christian Brand (born November 15, 1722 in Vienna ; † June 12, 1795 ibid) was an Austrian landscape painter , draftsman , etcher and engraver .

Life

He was the son of the landscape painter Christian Hilfgott Brand (* Frankfurt (Oder) 1695, † in Vienna in 1750) and the elder brother of the well as a landscape painter, as a student, member and later as a professor at the Imperial Court Academy make Friedrich August Brand . His second younger brother was probably the Austrian / German painter Heinrich Carl Brandt (born November 11, 1724 in Vienna, † May 6, 1787 in Munich ).

Brand studied at the Vienna Academy from 1736, where he was appointed chamber painter in 1766 . In 1772 he became a professor of landscape drawing at the Vienna Academy. His feeling for scenic natural beauties was particularly pronounced. Just as important are his detailed representations of the architecture, whereby the fine execution with lively and color-coordinated staffages is particularly to be emphasized. He is considered to be the first landscape painter to capture reality in such a way that he can be described as the father of Austrian landscape painting of the 19th century. His art forms the transition from the baroque to the landscape of the 19th century. His pictures were already very well received during his lifetime and can be found in galleries in Germany, France, England and Russia in addition to Vienna.

In 1876, Brandgasse in Vienna- Leopoldstadt (2nd district) was named after him.

Plant, reception

A special feature of Johann Christian Brand's work are 16 oil paintings , which are now in the permanent exhibition of the Vienna Army History Museum (Hall II). These are depictions of the cavalry at the time of Maria Theresa , using a series of copper engravings by Jacob Matthias Schmutzer , which appeared in 1768, as a template . In the above-mentioned oil paintings, charming landscape backgrounds are combined with a precise reproduction of the adjustment .
