Christian Hilfgott Brand (also Hilfegott , Hülfgott , Hulfgott , Helfgott , Theophil ; also Brand the Elder ; born 1693 , March 16, 1694 or 1695 in Frankfurt (Oder) ; died 1756 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian painter.

biography

River crossing , Christian Hilfgott Brand, Ca 'd'Oro , Venice

Christian Hilfgott Brand was born in Frankfurt (Oder). He completed his training in Hamburg , where his father had moved with his business. After completing his training, he moved to Regensburg to live with his mother's relatives. He was supposed to take an office job, but already had contact with the painter Christoph Ludwig Agricola and discovered his love for painting. The Agricola, influenced by the painters Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin , produced outstanding atmospheric landscapes.

After Agricola's death in 1719, Brand went to Vienna, where he settled in 1720. During this time he lost his first wife Rosina. On April 24, 1725 he married Maria Magdalena Thorwild (died August 26, 1789).

Brand was talented, but also smart enough to surround himself with a group of artists. From 1726 to 1728 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Around 1735 he met the painters Franz Christoph Janneck (1703–1761), Karl Aigen (1684–1762) and Josef Orient (1677–1747) in Frankfurt am Main . Brand became famous and soon regarded as one of the best landscape painters of his time. The imperial court mentioned him in 1738 as a specialist in painting in the Dutch style. In 1740 he was commissioned with a series of pictures that were larger than usual. He brought in his friend August Querfurt , who painted horses and people. The work, however, drained him. After six months he suffered a stroke that paralyzed him on one side. Brand changes from the right to the left hand and painted the picture Magnificat , which was famous at the time and which you can see no difference to his previous pictures. He remained court painter until the end of his life. In 1751 Brand was one of the first honorary members of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . In 1754 he became an advisor to the academy. The ambassador of Sardinia loved his pictures. The Danish ambassador to Austria Christian August von Berkentin commissioned a view of Vienna in 1740. Other enthusiasts of his works included the Canon of Mainz and Trier and the Danish envoy in Vienna Joseph Franz von Kesselstatt , the Sardinian envoy in Vienna Ludwig von Canal and the art theorist Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn . His later work influenced his son from his second marriage Friedrich August Brand and his son from his first marriage Johann Christian Brand . Christian Hilfgott Brand died on July 22, 1756 in Vienna.

»(German:" The first works of this artist were a little gloomy; but soon he changed his attitude. Grace and colourfulness characterize his new pictures. Few German landscape painters can depict the calm water and the rising mist scattered by the sun. Simply im Structure, he breaks down the variety of colors and coincidences. He paints good figures that are intelligently arranged. ")

»(German:" Nothing is calmer than its water, more humid than its dew, the plants bending under its weight. Nothing is richer than the reflections of the morning star that disappears on the clouds. ")

In the Grand dictionnaire universel du xix e siècle , Pierre Larousse wrote in 1867: “  Il excellait à peindre des eaux calmes, la rosée, des effets du soleil disparaissant sous les nuages.  »(German:" He shines when painting calm waters and with the dew that the sun sends into the clouds. ")

Jean Sylvain Bailly , the first mayor of Paris, wrote commentaries on contemporary artists. Coming from a family of painters, in his Recueil des pièces intéressantes sur les arts, les sciences et la littérature, published posthumously in 1810, he gives us references to brands as sources of inspiration: “  Dans ses paysages, pour la teinte des verts indécis, il s'approcha de Adriaen van de Velde, sans l'avoir imité: sa manière de dessiner les arbres, de jeter et de toucher les ronces et les broussailles tient beaucoup de celle de Jan Both; quant aux morceaux qu'il fit à l'instance des amateurs, s'il suivit le goût de Huisman, il ne prit que l'esprit et la perfection de son modèle. C'est dans le même sens qu'il sembla rechercher le goût de Wartele  »(German:“ In his landscapes with the many shades of green he follows Adriaen van de Velde without imitating him. His way of painting trees and closing bushes and shrubs arrange, resembles that of Jan Both . When designing the characters, he follows the manner of Cornelis Huysmans in the spirit and in the perfection of execution. ”). The general content of the article is generously drawn from Éclaircissements historiques sur un cabinet et les auteurs des tableaux qui le composent by Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn , a collector of Brand's works.

Museums and collections

Most of Brand's works are in museums on the former territories of the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy . The majority is kept in the Belvedere Palace in Vienna and the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu .

The only known portrait of Brands is a self-portrait that can be found in the Austrian monastery of Kremsmünster .
