Pierre Larousse
Pierre Athanase Larousse (born October 23, 1817 in Toucy , Yonne department , † January 3, 1875 in Paris ) was a French lexicographer , encyclopaedist and publisher .
Life
Larousse received his teacher training in Versailles . He was head of a small institute in the province for a long time, then a teacher at the Jauffret institution , a preparatory school for the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris. There he met Augustin Boyer (1821-1896) in 1851. Together they founded the publishing house "Librairie Larousse et Boyer" in 1852 , in which Larousse, among other works for the school, published his own numerous educational pamphlets, which were very successful. In 1869 he separated from Augustin Boyer. He died on January 3, 1875 after a stroke and was buried on the Cimetière Montparnasse in Paris.
His work served as the basis for the Editions Larousse publishing house founded by his descendants .

His main work is the anticlerical Grand dictionnaire universel du XIX. siècle (1864–1876, 15 vol .; Supplement 1878 and 1887), in which he attempted to restore the encyclopedia of the 18th century on a comprehensive basis .
