The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is an art museum in Milan , Italy.

The art gallery was named after the church father Ambrosius of Milan , the patron saint of Milan. The museum is located in the “Palazzo dell 'Ambrosiana”, which also houses the Biblioteca Ambrosiana .

history

The collection of paintings goes back to a foundation of Cardinal Federico Borromeo (1564–1631), Archbishop of Milan , who in 1618 made his private collection of over 250 paintings , sculptures and drawings available to the Ambrosian Library. The collection included works by important Lombard, Roman and Venetian masters. According to the cardinal's wishes, the works should serve the artistic training of young artists at the painting school "Accademia Ambrosiana", which he founded three years later.

The painter, sculptor and architect Giovanni Battista Crespi (1573-1632) was appointed the first director of the academy and its art collection, and Daniele Crespi (1597-1630), Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574-1625) and Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli (named Il Morazzone ; 1573-1626) counted.

collection

Today the museum's collection includes works of art from the 14th to the early 20th century in 24 halls. Five halls contain the works from the founding donation of Cardinal Borromeo.

Most of the rest of the inventory also comes from donations from private collectors, including the only surviving cardboard box for The School of Athens by Raphael , plaster casts of Laocoon and the Pietà by Michelangelo from the collection of the sculptor Leone Leoni (1509–1590) and paintings by Sandro Botticelli , Bramantino , Francesco Hayez , Giandomenico Tiepolo and Tizian .

The most popular paintings in the Pinakothek include the portrait of a musician by Leonardo da Vinci and the fruit basket by Caravaggio .

Interesting, also from a historical point of view, is the collection of work copies of famous paintings commissioned by Federico Borromeo for educational purposes, such as a bundle of copies of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci . The original from 1498 in the refectory of the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan was already in extremely poor condition at the beginning of the 17th century.
