August Querfurt (* 1696 in Wolfenbüttel , † 1761 in Vienna ) was a German genre , horse , hunting and battle painter .

life and work

August Querfurt was initially a student of his father Tobias Querfurt the Elder. Ä., Later he did an apprenticeship with Georg Philipp Rugendas in Augsburg . Querfurt can be traced back to Vienna in 1743, where he became an honorary member of the Vienna Academy in 1752 . He mainly painted battle paintings in the manner of Jacques Courtois , Philips Wouwerman and his teacher Rugendas. Querfurt painted a cycle of battles for Duke Karl Alexander von Württemberg , consisting of twelve paintings, including the two colossal paintings " The Battle of Belgrade" and " The Battle of Höchstädt " (both 11 × 4 m). Querfurt painted a cycle for Empress Maria Theresia consisting of eight paintings with events from the War of the Austrian Succession , which are now in the Army History Museum in Vienna.
