The Höttinger Bild is a pilgrimage chapel above Innsbruck and a traditional pilgrimage site for students.

location

The Höttinger picture is on the slope of the Nordkette at 905  m above sea level. A. and is surrounded by forest. The chapel can be reached on hiking trails from the Höttinger village center through the Höttinger Graben , from Sadrach via the Planötzenhof and from the Hungerburg via the Gramartboden. Stations of the cross lead from the Planötzenhof to the chapel. The area north of the chapel is also referred to as the Höttinger picture with seven house numbers.

history

According to legend, in 1675 the student Franz Anton Peier brought an image of Our Lady into the forest above Hötting and attached it to a larch . He visited the place frequently and asked Maria for help with his exams. When he was heard, other students also made a pilgrimage here and the picture, an engraving of the miraculous image of Maria Waldrast , was named “Maria der Studenten Refuge”.

In 1705 a simple wooden chapel was built, which was replaced by a brick chapel in 1774. In 1786 it was closed under Joseph II and should be canceled. However, it was expanded in 1794. The miraculous image was kept in the Höttingen parish church until the chapel was renovated in 1886.

The Höttinger Bild is a traditional place of pilgrimage for students in need of exams, but is also visited by other groups. For example, eleven master bakers vowed a pilgrimage on July 14, 1721, which has taken place every year on October 26 since then.

Interior of the chapel

The chapel, consecrated to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , is a two-bay , cross-vaulted room with a gable roof and a turret over the facade. The arched portal and similar windows are surrounded by a frame made of Höttinger breccia  . The increased choir is a fresco depicting the founding legend and grisaille - cartridges and rococo stucco by Franz Altmutter adorned by 1794th The baroque altar was created by Michael Egger in the same year. The image of grace is located in a gold-framed frame between two rotated columns. The chapel is a listed building .
