The Eschenlohe castle ruins ( Castel d'Ultimo in Italian ) are the ruins of a hilltop castle that was first mentioned in 1164 as Ulten Castle . It is located in the South Tyrolean Ulten Valley in the municipality of St. Pankraz . The mighty keep has been relatively well preserved, with remains of the curtain wall , the Zwinger and the palace .

The builders of the castle were the Counts of Ulten, a branch line of the Counts of Eppan . At the beginning of the 14th century the complex passed to the Counts of Eschenlohe, to whom the castle owes its name, which is in use today. From the 15th century, Eschenlohe was owned by the Counts of Trapp for several centuries . The complex began to decline in the 16th century. Today the castle is owned by the Schinzel family from Zurich.
