The Kastelbell Castle is a medieval castle in the village of Kastelbell (municipality Kastelbell-Tschars ) in Vinschgau in South Tyrol .

location

The castle is located at the foot of the Sonnenberg on a rock ledge above the SS 38 and is accessible from the west via a rock ridge.

history

Kastelbell Castle was built by the lords of Montalban , who as a Welf noble family were among the servants of the Counts of Tyrol, and after 1200 came into the possession of the Counts of Tyrol . The oldest documented mention of it comes from 1238. From 1531 it was a pawn loan from Count Hendl , who had the castle expanded to its present form. After fires in the 19th century, the building fell into ruins. In 1956 it was acquired by the Italian state and extensively restored from 1987 to 1995. It has been run by the Kastelbell Castle Board of Trustees since 1999 . In 2008 the Italian state, to which it had belonged since 1919, handed it over to the State of South Tyrol . The castle is used for cultural events such as exhibitions and concerts and is open to the public.
