The Maretsch Castle is located in the narrow city area of Bolzano just east of Talfer . The Niederungsburg from the 13th century can be reached from the city center via Claudia-de'-Medici-Straße.

history

The name of the later castle appears for the first time in 1180/90 as a Bozen field name under the designation "Moretes" . A Berthold of Bozen ( Bertholdus de Bauzano ) allegedly claimed in the older literature for the first castle construction around 1194 , however, has no causal connection with the castle. Rather, the first mention of the eponymous sex is only available in 1275 with Heinrich von Maretsch ( Enricus de Marets ), who was part of the ministry of Count Meinhard II of Görz-Tirol. The massive keep of the complex is to be placed in the 13th century, while individual expansion phases took place under different owners from the 14th century. Among other things, the circular wall with battlements and the dovetail pinnacles were added. In 1431 the castle appears under the name "Maretsch bey Botzen" and in 1438 as "Maretsch ober Botzen" .

The current appearance of the castle was under the Family Romans , in the 16th century the system to lock expand and with important frescoes from the Renaissance did embellish. The construction of the four round outer towers also dates from this time. From 1600 to 1657 Maretsch was owned by the Barons Hendl , and from 1658 to 1851 by the Counts of Thun and Hohenstein .

Maretsch Castle served as the seat of the Bolzano State Archives from 1921 to 1978 and is now used as a conference center , but can also be visited on request.
