The Sprechenstein castle ( Italian Castel Pietra ) is a castle at an altitude of 1073 m in the municipality of Freienfeld in South Tyrol . It is located just southeast of Sterzing in the Wipptal . The entire system is divided into two interconnected assemblies and is located exactly opposite Castle Reifenstein . The round tower is characteristic of Sprechenstein .
The castle is in good condition and is inhabited. For a long time it belonged to the family of the Counts and Princes of Trautson , and from 1775 to the Princes of Auersperg -Trautson.
The Erasmus Chapel (dedicated to St. Erasmus ) is located in the castle, surrounded by high castle walls . The castle chapel is in an early Gothic style.
There are also princely rooms in the castle for princes in transit, which are still furnished with well-preserved old furniture in the Renaissance style.
The castle is currently not open to visitors.
In the years 2007 to 2008 the heavily damaged farm belonging to Sprechenstein Castle was demolished and rebuilt except for two well-preserved walls. Another five-storey building was erected next to it, which not only includes a castle tavern and a cheese dairy, but also three holiday apartments and a private apartment. Several minor modifications were also carried out in the castle itself.
In autumn 2008, the farm was inaugurated by the South Tyrolean governor Luis Durnwalder , and regional councilor Hans Berger and the mayor of the municipality of Freienfeld, Armin Holzer, gave speeches and emphasized the importance of such projects that contribute to the care of South Tyrol's cultural treasures and agriculture. The dairy is already processing milk, and the castle tavern was finally opened at the beginning of summer 2009.
